Optics not only for airsoft guns - how to choose the right one

When selecting an optical sight, whether it is a model for airsoft, air rifle or live fire, it is important to carefully consider a number of specifications, including the purpose of use (hunting, airsoft, dynamic shooting or long range shooting), magnification and lens diameter. These factors play a vital role and can be confusing, especially for beginners. This article will give you an overview of the necessary information to make your decision easier and more cost-effective.

World of rifle scopes

FFP versus SFP?

Each variable magnification riflescope will be designated as either FFP or SFP. FFP (First Focal Plane), or first focal plane optics, means that the sight pattern enlarges with the lens as the view is magnified, which is advantageous for long-range shooters but may be redundant for airsoft. FFP scopes tend to be more expensive but offer accuracy in magnification. In contrast, SFP, or Second Focal Plane, optics keep the sight pattern constant regardless of magnification. This is ideal for situations where rapid changes in magnification are required, such as airsoft.

How important is the size of the lens?

The diameter of the lens, especially for long range rifle scopes, is usually 50 or 56 mm. Larger diameters provide better light output, allowing shooting in lower light conditions, while smaller diameters are suitable for guns with limited mounting space.

Illumination on rifle scopes - when is it useful?

The illuminator, usually in red, green or blue, improves the visibility of the sight crosshairs in different lighting conditions. This feature is often multi-tiered, allowing users to adjust the intensity to suit their current needs.

Riflescope recoil resistance

The recoil resistance of a rifle scope is a critical parameter, especially for firearms. Not all models are suitable for heavy calibers, so it is important to select a rifle scope that is capable of withstanding the demands of a particular weapon.

Waterproof and nitrogen filling

High-quality riflescopes are often waterproof and nitrogen-filled, which prevents fogging. This feature is essential for hunting and other outdoor activities where the riflescope is exposed to moisture.

LPVO - quick magnification adjustment - popular among airsoft players!!!

LPVO, which stands for "Low Power Variable Optics", are types of rifle scopes that offer variable magnification with a low range. These scopes have become very popular with both sport shooters and especially airsoft shooters, due to their flexibility and ability to quickly adjust magnification to the situation.

LPVOs typically offer magnifications ranging from 1x to 4x, 6x or 8x. This range of magnification allows the shooter to use the rifle scope as a collimator at 1x for quick close range shots and switch to higher magnification for more accurate targeting of more distant targets. This is ideal for a variety of tactical situations or fast-paced airsoft game scenarios.

LPVOs are designed to be rugged and resistant to shock and weather, making them suitable for use in harsh outdoor conditions. They often feature a solid aluminum alloy body that is lightweight, yet durable enough to last.

High quality optics are key. LPVOs typically offer a bright, clear image through the use of high-quality glass lenses and advanced coatings that maximize light transmission and improve visibility even in low-light conditions. Many LPVO models also offer illuminated crosshairs that allow for better target visibility in twilight or otherwise challenging lighting conditions.

LPVOs are designed for quick and intuitive operation. Magnification can be easily adjusted using the lever on the magnification ring, allowing for quick changes without taking your eyes off the target. This feature is particularly appreciated.

Turret lock and Zero stop

Turret lock is a lock that protects the turret adjustment of the rifle scope from unwanted rotation. Zero stop allows the shooter to quickly return to the preset zero distance, saving time and cost when readjusting.

Parallax and dioptric adjustment

Irregularities in vision known as parallax and dioptric adjustment are important features that help ensure accurate aiming regardless of the position of the shooter's eyes.

MOA and MRAD

These measurement systems are used for accurate range estimation and shot adjustment. MOA is based on angular minutes, while MRAD is based on milliradians, and the two systems offer shooters different options for sight alignment.

What do you take from this?

We've poured the basics into you so you have an idea of what's involved with rifle scopes. But since we're mostly airsoft guys, we'll give you some of our recommendations for rifle scopes that are perfect for airsoft:

1-4X24 Short Dot sight red/green Scope w. mount ring

You don't usually need high magnification for airsoft. Riflescopes with low magnification, typically 1-4x, are ideal because they allow for quick target acquisition at the shorter to medium distances that are typical for airsoft.

Scope FORESTER 1-5x24 SFP Gen II - LPVO - Black

It is the ideal choice for airsoft players looking for versatility and high functionality. Its low magnification of 1-5x allows quick target acquisition at short and medium ranges, which is typical for the dynamics of airsoft games. As a SFP (Second Focal Plane) riflescope, it maintains a consistent sight crosshair size regardless of the magnification selected, facilitating fast and accurate aiming. This model is also designed for shock and weather resistance, making it a reliable companion for intense airsoft events.

An alternative to it may be:

Scope VictOptics ZOD 1-4X20IR 1'' SFP nebo Vector Mustang 1-4x30 SFP Gen. II Scope

Of course, it's always up to your preference. You can find our full range of opticians in the link HERE.
