What is Bluing surface treatment?

Bluing is a traditional chemical surface treatment for steel in which a thin layer of black iron oxide (magnetite) is formed on the surface of the metal. Unlike paint or other coatings, it is not an applied layer but a controlled chemical conversion of the steel surface itself. The result is a characteristic dark blue to blue-black sheen from which the treatment gets its name. Bluing provides partial protection against corrosion, reduces reflections, and enhances the natural appearance of machined metal. To maintain its protective properties, a blued surface should be regularly treated with protective oil. This type of finish has been used on firearms since the late 19th century and remains a hallmark of high-quality steel construction to this day.

Bluing on Northeast STEN submachine guns

Northeast Airsoft uses an authentic surface finish inspired by original World War II firearms on its full-metal STEN GBB submachine gun replicas. Thanks to bluing, the steel body acquires a realistic blue-black tone, subtle metallic sheen, and a finish that naturally develops a patina with use, just like the historical originals. Compared with conventional painted replicas, the surface looks significantly more authentic and will appeal not only to airsoft players but also to collectors and reenactors. We have Northeast STEN GBB submachine guns with blued steel bodies in stock at ANAREUS CZ, so you can get your hands on one of the most faithful replicas of this legendary firearm.
