EVA Foam

EVA foam (Ethylene-Vinyl-Acetate) is a lightweight, flexible and impact-absorbing material created by combining ethylene and vinyl acetate. The result is a soft yet durable foam with excellent resistance to deformation and water. EVA is one of the most widely used materials in outdoor, military, and sports equipment. EVA foam was first developed in the 1960s by chemical companies such as DuPont and BASF during research into new lightweight polymers. Its properties quickly proved ideal for sports and protective gear — from shoe midsoles to reinforcement pads in military equipment. Thanks to its low weight, flexibility, durability, and shock absorption, EVA foam is one of the most important materials used today in military gear and outdoor equipment. From helmets to tactical gear and footwear, it increases comfort and safety for both professionals and airsoft players or hikers.

What makes EVA foam so effective?

EVA stands out because it is simultaneously lightweight, flexible, shock-absorbing and water-resistant. Unlike traditional polyurethane foam, it does not deform under long-term pressure and withstands low temperatures.

  • Excellent shock absorption:
Absorbs impact energy from falls or blows — which is why it’s used in pads, helmets, and footwear.

  • Lightweight and flexible:
The low weight is ideal for gear where comfort and mobility matter.

  • Water resistance:
EVA does not absorb water, does not break down, and works well in rain or humidity.

  • Thermal insulation:
Helps retain heat — for example in sleeping pads.

  • Chemical and UV resistance:
Increases gear longevity in harsh environments.

Use of EVA foam in military gear and clothing

EVA is used wherever protection, cushioning, and comfort are needed. Its low weight does not add unnecessary burden to the gear — essential for soldiers and airsoft players alike.

  • Shoulder and hip padding in tactical vests and plate carriers
Reduces pressure from the plate carrier and increases comfort during long wear.

  • Helmet padding
Absorbs impacts, improves helmet fit, and protects the head.

  • Knee and elbow pads
Increase shock absorption when kneeling or crawling.

  • Tactical footwear
Used as a midsole cushioning layer in boots (e.g., brands like LOWA, Salomon, Otte Gear).

  • Sleeping pads and seat mats
Insulate the body from the ground while providing cushioning.

Benefits of EVA foam for military and airsoft use

  • Low weight: Minimizes fatigue during long use of tactical gear.

  • Water and sweat resistance: Suitable for all weather conditions.

  • Great cushioning: Reduces joint strain and pressure from tactical equipment.

  • Long lifespan: Does not degrade even with intensive use.
