What is the HKey mounting interface and why was it developed?

HKey is a proprietary mounting interface developed by Heckler & Koch for the modern slim-line handguards of the HK416, MR223, MR308, and later also the early versions of the G95 (HK416 A7/A8) rifles. Its design follows the same basic concept as KeyMod – it uses slots machined directly into the handguard instead of conventional RIS rails, reducing weight and improving ergonomics. Although HKey slots may resemble KeyMod at first glance, they have different dimensions and geometry and are therefore not mutually compatible. HKey uses proprietary Heckler & Koch accessories or components specifically designed for this system. For the latest G95A1 and G95KA1 service rifles, the Bundeswehr ultimately switched to the M-LOK standard, which offers a wider range of accessories and better cross-manufacturer compatibility.

HKey vs. KeyMod vs. M-LOK

KeyMod was one of the first widely adopted modular mounting systems and uses its characteristic keyhole-shaped slots. HKey follows a similar principle but uses proprietary metric dimensions and rounded slot geometry, meaning KeyMod accessories cannot be securely mounted to it. M-LOK, on the other hand, uses elongated rectangular slots and, thanks to its simple design, high strength, and support from numerous manufacturers, has become today's industry standard. From an airsoft user's perspective, all three systems provide a similar function – mounting flashlights, lasers, grips, or bipods without the unnecessary weight of full-length Picatinny rails. However, if you are building an authentic replica of the HK416 A7, HK416 A8, or G95K, HKey is an essential detail for achieving the correct appearance.
