IP protection

Ingress Protection (IP) classification denotes the resistance of a device to dust and water. This classification comprises the letters "IP" followed by two numbers, with each number indicating a specific level of resistance.

Example IP Classification: IP68

First Number (Protection against solid particles):

0: No protection

1: Protects against solid objects larger than 50 mm (e.g., a large part of the human hand)

6: Complete protection against dust (no dust penetration)

Second Number (Water resistance):

0: No protection

8: Immersion in water for at least 1 meter (specific details may be specified by the manufacturer)

So, IP68 certification would indicate that the device is resistant to dust and capable of immersion in water according to specified specifications.
There are other classifications, such as IP67 or IPX4, each with a different degree of protection against water and dust.
