M-LOK

M-LOK is a modular mounting system for attaching accessories to firearms. The name stands for Modular Lock. It was developed by Magpul Industries as an open standard and first introduced in 2014. It is designed to attach accessories directly into slots on the weapon or handguard without the need for additional rail segments. The core of the system is oval-shaped slots with metric spacing and low-profile T-nuts that lock into the handguard material when tightened. Today, M-LOK is considered the most modern and most universal mounting system for tactical weapons – used by professionals, civilian shooters, and airsoft players alike. You can find M-LOK accessories, mounts, and compatible weapons on our e-shop as well.

Standard and compatibility

  • Slots are spaced according to the M-LOK specification (e.g. 20 mm), allowing for high compatibility between manufacturers.
  • The system is compatible with accessories like flashlights, bipods, grips, and Picatinny (RIS) rails and other attachments.
  • The standard is publicly available and free to license, which contributed to its widespread adoption.

Adoption by military and law enforcement

  • Used by U.S. and foreign armed forces.
  • In 2017, M-LOK was officially approved by the U.S. Army as a replacement for the KeyMod system.
  • Part of modern weapon systems like URGI (Upper Receiver Group Improved), FN SCAR rifles, HK416A7, and others.

Comparison with other systems

  • RIS / Picatinny: Fixed rails, heavier, less ergonomic, accessories bolt directly onto the rail.
Older and universal, but less modular.
  • KeyMod: Keyhole-shaped slots. Predecessor to M-LOK but with more complex installation and lower strength.
M-LOK has gradually replaced it in military use.
  • M-LOK: Easy installation and removal, lower profile, strong durability, higher modularity, and lower weight.
More advantageous especially for modern tactical weapons.

Did you know?

  • In comparative military testing, M-LOK showed better tensile strength than KeyMod, as well as greater reliability when dropped or remounted.
  • Thanks to its open license, M-LOK has rapidly spread into the civilian market and airsoft scene.
  • Many manufacturers offer conversion parts or adapters to switch from RIS / KeyMod to M-LOK.
