MOLLE Webbing

MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is a modular gear attachment system that allows for easy and secure mounting of pouches, holsters, and other accessories to plate carriers, vests, backpacks, or belts. The system is based on PALS webbing (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) – horizontal rows of nylon straps with regular spacing that serve as a “ladder” for securing gear using straps, plastic clips, or MOLLE inserts. While technically referred to as the MOLLE/PALS system, it is more commonly called MOLLE webbing.

History and Development

The MOLLE system was developed in the late 1990s for the U.S. military as a replacement for the older ALICE (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) system. The main goal was to create a more flexible, lightweight, and modular solution that would allow soldiers to customize their loadout for specific missions and environments. MOLLE was officially adopted in 2001 and quickly spread throughout U.S. Army units, later becoming standard for many NATO countries and other armed forces worldwide.

MOLLE vs. PALS – What's the Difference?

  • PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System): The technical term for the strap grid used as the base for attaching gear.
  • MOLLE: A broader term referring to the entire modular attachment system, including PALS webbing, compatible pouches, panels, and accessories.

Strength: MOLLE vs. ALICE

  • ALICE clips: Metal hooks that latched into gear openings. They were prone to falling off, bending, or breaking, especially under heavy loads.
  • MOLLE webbing: Uses tightly woven nylon straps (typically 1000D) that can withstand over 50 kg of pull force per attachment point. They also offer more even weight distribution and better stability with less noise.

Interesting Facts About the MOLLE System

  • The PALS grid consists of 25 mm wide webbing spaced 38 mm apart (25 mm gap + 13 mm overlap).
  • MOLLE is inter-brand compatible as long as the PALS standard is followed.
  • There are laser-cut versions of PALS webbing that reduce weight and improve tear resistance.
  • Many manufacturers use MOLLE not only for tactical vests but also for backpacks, pouches, medkits, tool rolls, and pistol holsters.

MOLLE in Airsoft

In airsoft, MOLLE is used just like in real military applications – for customizing gear, quick loadout adjustments, and convenient carrying of magazines, medkits, radios, and other accessories. It’s popular for its versatility, durability, and accessibility.
