RAHG

What is RAHG and why was this handguard developed for the HK416?

RAHG (Remington Accessory Handguard) is a modular handguard system developed by the American company Remington Defense that appeared in the early 2010s. It was originally designed for modern military rifles such as the Remington ACR, R5, and MSR, with configurations for the HK416 platform appearing later. Its characteristic feature is a smooth, ergonomically shaped aluminium handguard with a top RIS rail and the option to attach additional RIS rail sections only where they are actually needed. Compared with older quad-rail RIS handguards, this reduces weight and the number of sharp edges while improving grip. RAHG gained considerable popularity thanks to its association with the American elite unit DEVGRU (SEAL Team Six), whose members have, according to available documentation, been associated with modified HK416 rifles fitted with this handguard. However, this does not mean that it was the exclusive or universally used handguard throughout the entire unit. Geissele SMR (Super Modular Rail) handguards have also been seen in use by special operations units. The specific reasons for selecting RAHG have not been reliably documented in public sources, but its design offered strength, ergonomics, and the ability to individually position accessories, while being manufactured directly in the United States, which may have played a significant role in its selection.

RAHG vs. Geissele SMR vs. M-LOK – differences and applications in airsoft and beyond

RAHG uses its own system for attaching additional mounting rails with screws, while Magpul M-LOK uses elongated mounting slots with rotating T-nuts that allow a wide range of compatible accessories to be installed directly. Geissele SMR represents a separate family of handguard designs rather than a single mounting standard. Older SMR variants used a proprietary interface for additional RIS rail sections, while newer versions, such as the MK15, use M-LOK directly. The advantages of RAHG include its robust construction, smooth surface, secure accessory mounting, and authentic appearance of historical HK416 configurations associated with DEVGRU. Its disadvantages include the limited availability of specific mounting sections and lower versatility compared with the widely adopted M-LOK system. Modern M-LOK offers a wider selection of compatible accessories and generally makes it easier to reconfigure a setup, while the quality and rigidity of a handguard depend primarily on the specific product and how it is mounted to the gun. In airsoft, RAHG is less common and is primarily found among MilSim players, reenactors, and fans of Navy SEALs special operations units who want to faithfully recreate historical HK416 setups. Airsoft rifles with RAHG-style handguards are in stock at ANAREUS CZ (e.g. Specna Arms M4 / AR15 H-Series). They are an attractive choice for players looking for a distinctive HK416 appearance, high-quality construction, and the ability to build their own configuration inspired by elite special operations gear.
