What is STANAG and what does it mean?

STANAG stands for STANdardization AGreement, a NATO standardization agreement designed to standardize the equipment, ammunition, and procedures used by the armed forces of member states. Thanks to STANAG standards, the armed forces of different countries can use mutually compatible equipment, weapons, and accessories. In the field of small arms, the best-known is STANAG 4179, which defines the dimensions of magazines for rifles chambered in 5.56 × 45 mm NATO. Although it was never officially adopted as a binding NATO standard, it has become a de facto industry standard because it is used by most manufacturers of AR-15 platform rifles and their derivatives.

What does STANAG mean in airsoft?

In airsoft, the term STANAG magazine is primarily used for magazines designed for replicas of the M4, M16, HK416, MK18, L85, SCAR-L, TAVOR, and other platforms using an AR-15-type magazine well. It therefore does not refer to a specific manufacturer, but rather to the shape and compatibility of a magazine based on the military standard. As a result, magazines from different manufacturers can generally be used across compatible replicas. However, due to manufacturing tolerances, compatibility between individual brands may vary, and minor adjustments may sometimes be required.
