AR-15

AR-15 is a modular semi-automatic rifle originally developed by Armalite in the 1950s and later acquired by Colt. Today, the AR-15 is one of the most popular rifles in the world, both in military and civilian sectors, and serves as the foundation for many military firearms, including the M16, M4, and the HK416 platform.

History and Development of the AR-15

The AR-15 rifle was designed by Eugene Stoner as a lightweight assault rifle for the U.S. military. Due to its lightweight, modular construction, and accuracy, it was adopted under the designation M16. Later modifications led to the development of the shorter M4 carbine, which became the standard firearm of the U.S. armed forces and other NATO militaries.

Notable Military Variants of the AR-15

  • M16: The first fully automatic military variant of the AR-15, introduced during the Vietnam War.
  • M4: A modern carbine version of the M16 with a shorter barrel and burst-fire capability.
  • MK16 URGI: A specialized version of the M4 with an improved barrel and modular handguard, used by USSOCOM units.

Deployment in Conflicts

AR-15-based rifles have been used in numerous armed conflicts from the Vietnam War to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Due to their accuracy and reliability, they have become standard-issue weapons for many military forces, including the U.S., Canada, the UK, and other NATO members.

Modern Derivatives Based on the AR-15 Design

  • HK416: A German version of the AR-15 with a piston-driven system, used by elite units like Delta Force and SEAL Team.
  • V-AR: A Czech AR-15 variant with a piston-driven system, manufactured by V-AR.
  • PAR: A Czech AR-15 variant produced by PROARMS ARMORY.
