Cantilever

Cantilever mount is a special type of mount for optics or red dot sights with an extended (offset) design toward the front. This construction allows you to position the optic further forward without needing to mount it on the rearmost parts of the rail. Cantilever mounts are used mainly on AR-15 and similar platforms, where it is important to achieve the correct eye relief for rifle scopes or LPVO optics. High-quality cantilever mounts from Vector Optics can be found in our e-shop.

Difference compared to a classic (straight) mount:

  • Classic straight mount: The optic is mounted directly above the attachment point on the rail. This limits forward/backward adjustment and may make it difficult to achieve ideal eye relief.
  • Cantilever mount: Features an offset arm that moves the optic further forward. This makes better use of shorter top rails (e.g., on AR-15s with fixed front sights) and provides the shooter with a more natural and comfortable head position.

Advantages of a Cantilever mount:

  • Proper eye relief: Enables optimal adjustment of eye-to-optic distance.
  • Better ergonomics: On AR platforms it allows the scope to be pushed forward, improving head position while aiming.
  • More rail space: Frees up room for additional accessories (red dot sight, magnifier, laser, flashlight).
  • Versatility: Suitable for LPVO, traditional scopes, or scope + magnifier combinations.

Disadvantages compared to a classic mount:

  • Higher cost: Quality cantilever mounts are generally more expensive than basic straight ones.
  • Increased weight: The extended construction can add extra weight.
  • Larger profile: May slightly increase the rifle’s silhouette.
