RPM

RPM (Rounds Per Minute) is a unit that indicates the number of rotations or shots per minute. In airsoft it is used primarily for motors to show the rotation speed of the shaft, which directly affects the rifle’s rate of fire (RoF) in AEG platforms. Higher RPM means the motor drives the gears faster, resulting in a faster firing cycle.

Why is RPM specified for airsoft motors?

RPM directly influences:

  • rate of fire – more rotations = faster burst speed,
  • trigger response – gears accelerate faster,
  • overall cycling of the AEG.

That’s why RPM is one of the key parameters when selecting a motor for performance upgrades.

Difference between 27k vs. 49k RPM

  • 27k (27 000 RPM) – suited for torque-focused builds: strong springs, DMR rifles, reliable function without extreme RoF.
  • 49k (49 000 RPM) – intended for high-speed builds, extreme RoF, CQB, speedsoft and fast trigger response.

Higher RPM places greater demands on gears, wiring, the MOSFET and the battery.

Torque vs. speed setups

  • Torque build – stronger springs (M130+), lower RoF, stable cycling, more torque.
  • Speed build – lighter springs, maximum rate of fire and instant trigger response.

Selecting a motor depends on whether the priority is shot strength or burst speed.

How does the battery affect RPM?

  • Voltage – higher voltage (11.1V vs. 7.4V LiPo) increases RPM.
  • C rating – higher discharge capability enables fast current delivery.
  • Cell type – LiPo/Li-Ion provide high current draw ideal for performance setups.

The battery, wiring and MOSFET must therefore match the motor’s performance.

Brushless motors – the future of AEG performance

Modern brushless motors outperform traditional brushed motors by offering:

  • higher performance with lower consumption,
  • less heat generation,
  • longer lifespan – no brushes or commutator wear,
  • smoother operation due to precise control.

They are becoming a go-to option for high-performance AEG platforms.
