AK-74 was introduced into service with the Soviet Army in 1974 as the successor to the AKM (AK-47). The transition to the 5.45 × 39 mm caliber brought better control during automatic fire and improved accuracy at longer distances. The standard AK-74 featured a fixed stock, while the AKS-74 offered a folding metal stock designed for airborne troops. The modernized AK-74M unified the design with a polymer stock and handguard, becoming the standard rifle of the Russian armed forces. The compact AKS-74U, often referred to as “Krinkov”, was designed for vehicle crews and special units. Development continued toward the modern AK-12, which introduces ergonomic improvements, mounting rails, and better compatibility with modern accessories. The AK platform has thus evolved from a classic steel construction to a modern modular concept.
